Kovalchick Corp. donates $500,000 to Indiana mental health project

Tribune-Democrat - 2/29/2024

Feb. 29—INDIANA, Pa. — A new behavioral health facility scheduled to open later this year is getting a $500,000 boost from Kovalchick Corp., company President Joe Kovalchick announced this week.

Construction began last fall on the 31,000-square-foot, 44-bed mental health facility on the Indiana Regional Medical Center campus. One of the building's four wings will be named in honor of the Kovalchick donation.

"It is with great pride and satisfaction that our family business of 96 years enables us to give back for the good of our great community and especially our hospital facility," Joe Kovalchick said.

When the new facility was announced in October, leaders noted that mental health treatment was the No. 1 reason for transfers from emergency departments throughout the region. In 2021, 200 Indiana County residents were placed in 23 inpatient facilities in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

"We are very fortunate to have families and businesses like the Kovalchicks in our community, who appreciate and value the work we do to enhance patient care," hospital President and CEO Steve Wolfe said. "This generous gift will positively impact patients, families, and our community as a whole."

Armstrong-Indiana-Clarion Drug and Alcohol Commission, Armstrong-Indiana Behavioral Health and Development Program, and Southwest Behavioral Health Management are partnering with the hospital to get a $4.8 million HealthChoices reinvestment grant for construction costs through the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services' Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.

Hospital spokeswoman Annie Rizzo said construction is progressing on schedule for the mental behavioral health unit.

"A drive onto campus will show you the building is forming more and more each day," Rizzo said. "We are very excited for its completion later
