Fairfield County to celebrate Veterans Day on November 11, 2017

The Fairfield County Museum and Historical Society will join with organizations in Winnsboro and Fairfield County to celebrate Veterans Day on November 11, 2017.

This event commemorates the 100th anniversary of the US joining with Europe to fight the War to End All Wars. Veterans Day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended the World War I hostilities between the Allied nations and the Central Powers in 1918.

Please plan to celebrate with us to honor the brave men and women who have served to protect and ensure our freedom.

Schedule of Events:

? 10 a.m. -Parade starts at the corner of Liberty and Congress and turns east at College to the War Memorial Park at Mt. Zion.

? 10:45 a.m. -Parade arrives at the War Memorial Park.

? 11 a.m. -Wreath laying and comments at the World War I Memorial.

? 11:30 a.m. -Public reception and viewing of the new exhibit in the Fairfield County Museum, 231 S. Congress St.

? 12:30 a.m. -Four distinguished speakers/authors to present at the Christ Central Community Center at 235 S Congress St. (next to the Museum).

Speakers are Brian Brooks, Dean of the School of Journalism, University of Missouri, who will be speaking on his research and book about his Grandfather Robert Rabb Shedd, who served with distinction with the famed 42nd (Rainbow) Division. Bob received four battle wounds while serving in Company C of the 117th Engineer Regiment.

Sonya Hodges Grantham, historian and Columbia area civic leader, researched and installed the first historical marker in the US to honor the 371st Infantry Regiment, 93rd Division (Colored) of World War I. In her leadership capacity, she served in many roles in the Red Cross services at Ft. Jackson, the United States Department of Agriculture, National Agriculture Statistics Service, (via-State of Maryland) and organizer/founder of several area events, author of several books, and restorer of the historic Childs Cemetery in Columbia.

Jonathan Johnson, a native of Winnsboro, is a behavioral technician in child and adolescent psychology at USC and Project Coordinator for Columbia SC 63: Our Story Matters. His great grandfather served in World War I with the 371st Infantry Regiment. Frank Johnson's story had a tragic ending after he returned home from the war, suffering with the effects of a terrible war experience, common to many returning soldiers.

Fritz Hamer, Curator of History, SC Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum, has produced many major exhibits, books, and articles, and is well known in historical research circles. He will present information that he was has assembled in his book, Forward Together: South Carolinians in the Great War.

A book-signing event will take place in the museum.
