Organizers gear up for Veterans Day Parade

Appeal-Democrat - 11/9/2017

Nov. 09--There's still time to be part of a patriotic tradition.

More than 160 entries are registered for this weekend's 15th annual Yuba-Sutter Veterans Day Parade "and they're still coming in," organizer Cindy Verrill said Wednesday.

"Last year we had 10 walk-ons on the day of the parade," she said. Anyone who calls can be added, she said, but they are placed at the end of the parade.

The annual parade is at 11 a.m. this Saturday, on D Street in Marysville.

This year's grand marshal is Col. Larry Broadwell, commander, 9th Reconnaissance Wing at Beale Air Force Base.

Though Verrill, one of the parade's original founders, doesn't get to watch the parade, she and other parade committee members have a system to keep it running smoothly.

"I send them (parade entries) down the street and see the tail end of everybody," she said with a laugh. She later looks at photos taken for the parade's Facebook page. "It gives me a chance to see it from the front."

Because the national holiday falls on Saturday this year, it should have a larger audience, Verrill said.

The last time the parade took place on Saturday several years ago, Marysville police estimated the crowd at more than 10,000 people, Verrill said.

"As of right now, (Saturday) is supposed to be a beautiful day," she said. If not, "I'll just get soaked."

The national holiday is observed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th year, commemorating the time and day when major hostilities of World War I ended.
