Military Rec: Soldier dedicates pro boxing debut to Wounded Warriors

Fayetteville Observer - 8/11/2018

Aug. 11--A Fort Bragg soldier will donate part of his proceeds from his professional boxing debut to help wounded warriors.

Jacob "El Gallo" Flores, a soldier with the 3rd Special Forces Group, will fight in the Operation Knockout boxing show at Fort Bragg's Sports USA on Aug. 18.

He's dedicating the fight and $1 from every ticket he sells to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Flores is a native of Houston, Texas, who took a lengthy break from boxing while focusing on his military career. He won the 2017 Soldier of the Year Best Warrior Competition for 1st Special Forces Command and placed third overall at the 2018 3rd Special Forces Group Best Warrior Competition.

He returned to boxing by taking part in Fort Bragg's Friday Night Smokers, a weekly event at Sports USA.

Since then, he's taken up training under Lawrence Blackwell, a retired Army captain and former professional boxer.

Fayetteville native Michael Williams Jr., the Universal National Boxing Council belt holder, will fight in the main event, and Johnathan Foreman, the nephew of legendary boxer George Foreman Sr., is also on the card.

A free meet and greet with Roy Jones Jr. is scheduled ahead of the fights, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Fights begin at 7 p.m.

To purchase tickets online to generate proceeds for the Wounded Warrior Project, go to Eventbrite.com and search for Jacob Flores.

General admission tickets are available for $30, and ringside seats are $50. Active-duty military can purchase tickets for $25.

More information about the schedule of events and updates to the fight card are available on Operation Knockout Pro Boxing's Facebook page.
