---- PROTOTYPE --------- PURPOSE: To create a prototype of a dispensing and packaging line system for individuals who are blind or have low vision. A company had an existing soap packaging system that required sight in order to load the machine and dispense the product. The National Industries for the Blind (NIB) was asked to determine how employees who are blind or have low vision might be able to operate these machines. The NIB fabricators installed an incline screw conveyor with auto sensors to feed the machine. The dispenser was fitted with a weight sensitivity proportion value so when a bag was being filled, the correct amount was dispensed. For quality assurance, a talking weigh scale was used to verify weights before shipping. The cost was several thousand dollars but provided full-time employment for individuals who were blind or had low vision on a very large contract. AUTHOR: Casmir Usiatynski.
