---- “DO IT YOURSELF” ENTRY ------- PURPOSE: Modify a folding cane or folding crutch so that it stays folded. The Velcro straps are made from sticky back Velcro which can be obtained at any craft, sewing, hardware store, or online. INSTRUCTIONS: The Velcro has two parts to it, the fuzzy end and the spiky rough end. The adhesive back of the rough end will be what to stick to the upper part of the barrel of the cane. For a cane that folds in two, that is a 3 inch circumference, which requires approximately 8-9 inches of rough Velcro. For a cane that folds into four segments, approximately 13 inches of rough Velcro is needed. Three inches or less is needed of the fuzzy Velcro. Cut segments of Velcro to the proper length: one fuzzy, one rough—the rough being 3 inches longer than the fuzzy in length. Put the sticky backs of the two pieces of Velcro together, staggered by 3 inches, leaving 3 inches of stickiness exposed on the rougher, spikier side. This creates a strap that is rough on one side, fuzzy on the other. The rough side is longer and has a sticky back exposed. NOTE: Make sure to position the Velcro to go between any holes in the case so the height can still be adjusted. Put the sticky part of the 3 inches of rough Velcro onto the cane barrel, near the upper end. Press down firmly. The cane can now be folded, the strap wrapped around with the fuzzy side out, and the strap will now stick to itself. SKILLS REQUIRED: Basic.
