Mechanical can crusher donated to Vietnam veterans association

Republican Herald - 3/16/2020

Mar. 16--PORT CARBON -- A new mechanical can crusher was donated to the Veterans of the Vietnam War Home Association on Sunday afternoon.

Joseph and Betty Zaprazny, New Ringgold, donated the $20,000 machine to the association, which celebrated the donation at the home on Fifth Street in East Norwegian Township.

Tom Gerhard, deputy district director and director of community development for U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser, R-9, was on hand as the large machine was presented. Joseph Zaprazny, who was also present, owns Joe's You Pull It and E.O.J. Coal Co. Inc., both in New Ringgold. About five members of the association also attended.

Association President William "Rabbit" McElvaney, Port Carbon, said it was "great" that the can crusher was donated.

It will be used to crush aluminum cans and scrap metal given to the association by the public. Members then sell the items to Weiner's Junkyard, Pottsville.

Proceeds from the sale to the scrapyard will be used to maintain Odd Fellows and Brown's Church cemeteries, located across from the association home in East Norwegian Township and Port Carbon. Both are maintained by the association.
